Foodpanda Says Goodbye To Thailand After 13 Years

Berlin-based Delivery Hero has announced that its Foodpanda platform will cease food and grocery delivery services in Thailand starting 23 May 2025, concluding a 13-year run in the highly competitive Thai market.

This decision is part of Delivery Heroโ€™s strategy to streamline its global operations, following its earlier exits from Denmark, Ghana, Slovakia, and Slovenia. The company plans to redirect its investments toward higher-growth markets across the Asia-Pacific region. However, its Thailand-based regional support team, which manages HR, marketing, and other operational functions for the APAC region, will remain unaffected by the move.

Mounting Losses

Foodpanda faced significant challenges in Thailandโ€™s 86-billion-baht food delivery sector, where it captured only 15% of the market, trailing far behind Line Man Wongnai with 44% and GrabFood with 39.4%. Notably, GrabFood stands out as the only player to have achieved profitability in this highly competitive space. Over the years, Foodpanda accumulated losses totaling 13.8 billion baht between 2014 and 2023, and has yet to experience a profitable year since its launch in 2012.

Efforts to sell the business in 2023 also fell through, with potential buyers like Grab and Chinaโ€™s Meituan reportedly walking away from negotiations. Analysts highlight that Thailandโ€™s food delivery market is showing signs of contraction in the post-pandemic era, as more diners return to dining out at restaurants. This trend, confirmed by the Kasikorn Research Centre, points to further challenges for the remaining players in the industry.

A Thankful Farewell

In its statement, Delivery Hero extended gratitude to its employees, riders, and partners, emphasising its commitment to ensuring a seamless transition. Meanwhile, Foodpanda Thailand took to social media to convey its message: โ€˜While we deeply regret that our journey has come to an end, we are immensely thankful to everyone who has been part of this incredible ride over the years.โ€™
