One of the most profound aspects of therapeutic work is reconnecting with our inner children. Yes, we donโt just have one inner child โ we have several. Some are sources of strength and resilience, while others carry wounds in need of healing. The inner children requiring our attention are those parts of us still stuck in past narratives, unable to move forward.
Picture a moment from your early years โ perhaps you were standing outside a door, hearing your parents argue. In that moment, you might have felt as though your world was falling apart. That fear, that uncertainty, can leave a lasting impression, creating an emotional disconnect that follows us into adulthood. When the events are more traumatic, they can lead to deeper fragmentation, leaving parts of us frozen.
Trauma, especially in childhood, can create moments where a piece of us becomes trapped, unaware that the past is over. That part of you might still feel like a scared child, unable to process what happened. This is where inner child healing becomes essential โ it provides a pathway to process those experiences and release the emotions weโve been holding onto.
Through this work, we meet the parts of ourselves still carrying the emotional charges of former events. By gently guiding these inner children to understand that the event is over, we help them release those charges, reinterpret the experience in a neutral way, and stop taking othersโ behaviours personally. In doing so, we lovingly guide these inner children back to the present moment.
As we navigate this healing journey, itโs crucial to ground ourselves in the wisdom of our adult selves. The adult part of you knows the past is over, yet the emotional body may still hold onto unfinished business. By acting as a loving parent to your inner children, you provide the safety, nurturing, and guidance they may not have received in the past. This work isnโt about blaming your parents โ they were doing the best they could with the knowledge they had at the time. Instead, itโs about acknowledging your own experience and transforming it on a deeper level. In a safe space, we can process these unresolved emotional charges, release old conclusions that no longer serve us, and use the wisdom of today to navigate life without being hijacked by previous events. Recognising that your inner child is worthy of love and healing opens the door to a more compassionate relationship with yourself. This, in turn, allows you to create a richer, more fulfilling life grounded in self-love and understanding.
Engaging in inner child healing within a therapeutic setting is one of the most loving gifts you can offer yourself. Itโs an opportunity to free yourself from patterns shaped by the past and create space for greater peace and fulfillment in your life. Hypnotherapy, in particular, is a powerful avenue for exploring this transformative work. We all carry experiences that may still influence us today, but with a little inner work, we can break free and step into a more empowered, peaceful future.
